THE UNMENTIONABLES: SEX, DRUGS, AND A CRAPPY BOSS…
We developed 'The Unmentionables' in our time at Eliza Corp with a focus on quantifying the impact of life challenges (things like caregiver stress, financial stress, relationship stress, workplace stress) on health. Through our research, we learned that people who report dealing with 4 or 5 Unmentionable issues are over five times more likely to report bad health than people who are not experiencing these life challenges. The role of resilience, and coping mechanisms, became super clear early on - and we named the positive coping factors (things that help us persevere when life throws a curve ball - things like having a strong support system, spirituality, exercise) 'buffers', and the negative coping factors (behaviors that bring us further down when things are already hard - things like substance abuse, loneliness, trouble sleeping) 'magnifiers'.
Obsessed with the idea of getting conversations started that could help all of us with these Unmentionables, we created The Vulnerability Index - which used matching algorithms to cross-walk the need for support to tools for coping with these challenges...always with the goal of helping people feel better, happier, healthier, less alone. It's a great honor to see this fundamental idea that 'health is life, and we need to expand the definition of health to include life, because when life goes wrong health goes wrong' become so much more mainstream.
